Prairie View A&M University, or PVAMU for short, is a historically black university located in Prairie View, which is a city in Waller County, in the US state of Texas, with a population estimated at a number of little over 4000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.2 square miles, all land, and it is neighbored by Pine Island, Texas to the south, Waller, Texas to the east, and Hempstead, Texas to the west.
PVAMU was founded in 1876, and it is the second oldest state-sponsored institution of higher education in Texas. It offers its students baccalaureate degrees in 50 academic majors, 37 master’s degrees and four doctoral degree programs, all offered through 9 colleges and schools, among which there are: College of Agriculture and Human Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Juvenile Justice and Psychology, College of Engineering and the Graduate School.
Prairie View A&M's athletic teams are known as the Pathers, which compete in NCAA Division I-AA in football, and Division I in all other varsity sports, including in golf, soccer, volleyball, bowling, basketball and cross-country. The Panthers are, perhaps, best known for their achievements in women's basketball, in which they received national attention in 2005 with the naming of Cynthia Cooper as the head basketball coach, and for the fact that, the football team lost 80 consecutive games in 1989-98.
